PsySub Hemp Jewelry & Design

Customer Feedback

I'm not a fan of pewter charms, but the brilliant enameling makes this one worth it. :) I absolutely love the colors (and the eco-friendliness) of the hemp and beads used in this necklace. It goes with so many things in my wardrobe! It's light-weight and comfortable, not scratchy at all, and easy to put on and take off. I like the slightly different effects I can achieve with the adjustable chain as well. Keep up the wonderful work! :)

who makes this stuff, anyways?

The PsySub People

Psychedelic Sub-Culture, or PsySub for short is a small independent jewelry fully run and owned by Aaron and Jessie. Aaron and Jessie have been husband and wife for 7 years now, and that is as long as their love child "PsySub" has been alive. They work together on all projects. The goal of PsySub design is to both support our happiness by helping us live our life the way we enjoy, cultivating our creativity with everything that we make. We also want to spread happiness to our customers by creating self expressionate pieces of jewelry that make you feel good about your individuality.

Jessie Matheny has been designing various types of jewelry for over 18 years. She has been specializing in hemp jewelry for about 12 years. Living and growing up in Montana, she spent her days learning every type of craft from painting to sculpting, beading and sewing. Soon after moving to a more cultured northern California, she discovered that many young people made money by selling their jewelry in the busy summers. Noticing that many of them were making hemp jewelry, she was inspired. However, she noticed a lack of differing styles in the hemp jewelry around here, even in stores. Her goal quickly became to make hemp jewelry in many different colors, styles and genres. Especially for the counter culture.  She then began vending her original designs on the Santa Cruz boardwalk in the summertime, and has been doing so since 2001. She still continues this creative sharing every year.

Jessie moved back to Montana for a short time in 2005, when she met her soon to be lover Aaron. She had always felt held back by an inability to expand her business. Without the help of another dedicated person the ability to share her creations was limited. After about a year together, she had taught Aaron macramé, chain maille, and leather working. Aaron was very supportive of her want to focus all of her energy and assets on creating a subculture design company of infinite proportions. Together, they invested in many materials and tools and began to create many different types of jewelry with a ambition that had never been seen before. Unfortunately, they found that they were limited by the lack of culture around them. Soon enough, they would decide to follow their dreams and move together to California, where they could share their art with various genres of sub-culture people and traveling tourists from around the world. Horray!

For almost 6 years now, PsySub has been selling and trading jewelry on online forums, Etsy, and at various club venues in the Bay Area. Over 4000 Etsy Sales and counting!

We take our crafting very seriously, paying close attention to detail and spending hours coming up with the best designs before making our final creations. We use only the best in high quality materials, and guarantee all of our products durability, but if there were ever to be any problems we would fix it at no extra cost to the customer. We are extremely happy to be able to share our designs with the world; and very appreciative that people are willing to support our business by not only purchasing items, but also by inspiring us with comments and new ideas that keep our creative juices flowing. PsySub is about helping cultivate the creativity and individuality in everyone, and I hope by showing everybody the potential of art we can inspire other people as well. Big thanks to everyone who has been a supporter of PsySub for helping me have a job that I truly love!

Jessie Matheny has aim to revolutionize hemp jewelry design in many different ways. She takes the original and traditional styles of hemp and macramé jewelry and gives them a more modern look and style. While still taking into account the natural and earthy styles she likes to add bright vibrant colors, symbolistic pendants, handmade art glass and clay beads, and sturdy clasps to make sure the pieces will both appeal to each individual in a very specific way and have extremely long lasting quality. The PsySub company dyes all of their own hemp colors themselves and uses only multi-ply Romanian hemp, which is the best hemp in the world. She collaborates with lots of other handmade blown glass and lampwork artists. She also takes extreme care in the articulation of every knot, making sure they are symmetrical, evenly spaced, and tightly made. Psysub's hemp designs also always include industrial strength gluing at the ends and stainless steel clasps.
